Aussie Kids View WWII, 2007, is a 102 page book based on the childhood memoirs of 28 people born between 1935 and 1940 in all states of Australia. Price $19.80.

The memories are supported with material from newspapers and journals of the time. The foreword is written by the Director of the Australian War Memorial, and ten photos from the War Memorial’s collection are included along with photographic records from the contributors.

This book was compiled by residents of the Bramble Bay area north of Brisbane as a community project funded by the Brisbane City Council. The poems and illustrations describe the treasures of wetlands, seashore, and creek environment, as well as the heritage of Sandgate.

This book showcases the writings of people with autism and Down syndrome who communicate by typing or pointing to letters on a ‘Qwerty board’. Most require a facilitator to keep their hand steady and record their work. It gives an amazing insight into the wisdom of these people whose intelligence is too often hidden by behaviour and social difficulties.

The Brotherhood of the Wordless is a Brisbane based group which meets once a month in Sandgate.
